Strange virus disabling my soundcard and antivirus software, not allowing zonealarm.exe etc.

Hi there
I contracted a strange virus yesterday. It erased my system restore points so I cannot go back.
It erased zonealarm and AVG, and disabled my sound. If I log in with a non-admin user, I can get the sound back, but as soon as I log back in with an admin user I lose it again :(
Whenever I create a file named zonealarm.exe , it automatically disappears from my desktop so I cannot reinstall zonealarm or any other AV software including Trend Micro :(

I ran hijackthis and here's my log:

Not very nice it seems, I feel your frustration.

Looking at your Hijack This log, it seems that there are a few suspect entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BKEXVGA] C:\WINDOWS\system32\BKEXVGA.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HIDDAEMON] C:\WINDOWS\system32\HIDDAEMON.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HIDPATCH] C:\WINDOWS\system32\HIDPATCH.exe

I would run Spybot Search and Destroy, this usually helps me a lot.

Also see this article, someone had the same virus I believe:

Best of luck!

When I try to get into safe mode, I get a blue screen of death and I have to manually reboot :(

Ah sorry I didn't notice it was your post as well!

You may have to resort to editing the registry yourself to remove the startup entries in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run which are hightlighted as being "nasties".

To be safe, if you run MSCONFIG and go to the Startup section, you can temporarily disable certain startup items to see if these are causing the problem.
If they are, then you can then delete them using Regedit in the section mentioned above.

I had to do this myself as there was no way to even get an Antivirus or scanner to run without crashing, even in Safe mode.
