Do I need third party software "ScanRouter" to have scanned docs send to email in PDF format?

I just took over a network that has 2 Gestetner all-in-one scanner\printer\copier.  The company is using ScanRouter on a Windows 2000 box to receive the scanned image, turn it to PDF and forward it to our Exchange 2000 mailbox.  My question is, do I even need this?  I'm new to Gestetner printers but I didn't think they needed third party software to do basic feature like network scan?  Shouldn't that be able to scan and send to mailbox direct without third party software?  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys,  I setup the smtp authentication and it worked without the scanrouter.  (Which is what I wanted because that particular machine crashes a couple times a day)  One less headache!

Thanks again...
