Cant connect to router through modem
Hi
im having trouble accessing a cisco 871 via a modem, i have had to reset it as it didnt even work througha console cable, not it comes up ok on there. The problem is now in a hyper terminal i only get the following characters appear
x and also sometimes C, but mostly it just says connected and does nothing else.
it connects via a US robotics modem, model 3453Cwith dip switches 1 and 10 on and the rest off, im not sure about those settings, but i have 2 modems same setup.
The cisco itself can be reset as there is no config on it at the moment.
does anyone have any ideas

Is your terminal emulation set to "VT100"?
And as far as dip switches, most are standard as you view it....
Pins, 1,3,7, and or 8 are DOWN.... The rest should be up.

I forgot to mention that when you CHANGE any dip switch setting you will need to power cycle the modem prior to trying to connect to it.....

still doesnt come up, strange.
Is there anything else i could try? could the unit itself be faulty?

Just as an FYI.......
1) If the modem answers and you can connect and or stay connected to it....Its not the modem nor your modem you use to dial to it.
2) Typically funny characters as seen above in you output statement indicate that you are connected to the device but there is a mismatch in your settings either in your terminal setup or on the modem or console interface. If this is a new router or if the router is in a "Factory default" settings state, you shouldnt have to worry about setting the speed on the console port.
