Hi!
Do you need date/time in the message?

Just be aware that if you set up an O/S job to check every few minutes if an Oracle database is down, and send you an e-mail, your mailbox may get flooded if the database is ever down for maintenance, or if you are sleeping, on vacation, or just not checking your e-mail for some time.

Also, which server will you schedule this on?  If you run this on the same server as the database, but the server itself goes down, you will *NOT* be informed by e-mail that Oracle is down!

Then what about the problem of the database being up, but the Oracle listener is down?  That will also prevent new user connections, even though the database is "up".
markgeer has a point here.
If you want to bring this to a more professional level I would recommend nagios.

www.nagios.org

To check your listner you can use tnsping <SID>
IP can be used as well.

hi peter991:

i have created cronjob script (which u given ), but when i shutdown my database, i not receiving  any email. what will be the resion.

Then how to check and test whether my OS(sun solaris 8) sending mail or not.
Hi!
Perhaps you need to configure your sendmail.
I recommend that you start a new question about sendmail in unix-zone.
I'm sure you will get alot of help on this issue.

Regards
