Control which program starts when a file is opened, per-user
Windows Server 2003 as a terminal server; users logging in via Windows XP Pro thin-client PCs.
Is it possible to have a file opened in a different program depending on the user? For example: so that a Word document will, by default, open in Microsoft Word for a few selected users; restricted users will be able to open the same file but it will load in Microsoft Word Viewer instead.
We can't afford to license the Microsoft Office suite to several hundred users, especially as they don't need to edit any of these documents. Moreover, this would simplify Group Policy.
Users already have GPOs set per-Active Directory user group, as well as login scripts for different user groups; I can alter any of these to deploy the solution if necessary.
Many thanks in advance...
