How does Windows Server 2008 communicate with host XP machine

I am trying to set up a development machine for MOSS 2007 and to this end I have installed VMWare and can happily install Windows Server 2008 onto the virtual machine.

I want to know how to get the host machine to connect to the virtual machine - I am guessing that this is something to do with active directory etc..

I have noted that there are a whole load of different active directory roles available to the virtual machine but I do not know which of these to use?

Hi,

Please confirm if you want to run MOSS 2007 on win2008 or what is your requirement.

1) do you want the host machine (winXP) running vmware to communicate with Win2008 or you want the win2008 to communicate with WinXP.

2) Where do you intend to install MOSS2007

3) What is the type of testing that you intend to.

4) Do you want to make the win2008 machine a DC

For making the win2008 machine a DC you can run dcpromo and select  the Active Directory® Domain Services (AD DS). otherwise in roles you can select the AD DS

revert back if there are any further clarifications

Hi Bhanu

My specific requirement os to set up a virtual win2008 server as a development environment for MOSS2007. I am a developer and use c# and I wish to start working wiith sharepoint.

I have been having trouble getting sharepoint to work on the virual machine although without AD I have installed the standalone version and this has worked.

I wish to be able to communicate with the virtual machine from the host machine as if I were an intranet user of sharepoint.

Does this help?

yes

now if your testing is going to involve AD integrated portal then first make the win2008 machine a DC running DC promo or by going to the server manager and selecting AD DS role which is required to make this a DNS. ITs only the names have changed and more additional roles created in win2008 in comparision to win2003.

As far as installing MOSS2007 is concerned hope you are trying to install moss2007 with SP1 as that is the version which is compatible with win2008.

Ok thanks

But I am still unclear on how to communicate between the host XP and the Virtual win2008 server

BTW I have created a slipstream version of moss2007 with SP1 and this is installing fine.
