Default route redundancy

Hi,

I've a serious problem. Here is my network :

FAI
|
|
Router BGP
|
|
|
|                   WAN
6509_1 --------------------- 6509_2

The default for the 6059_1 is the router BGP. But when the route between the router BGP and the FAI is down, i want my traffic to be redirected through the WAN link.
I have a 12.2 IOS Cisco and I'm not able to upgrade to 12.3 or 12.4 IOS... (i.e, i'm not able to use the track rtr command.....)

Secondly, HSRP cannot be implemented as the 2 routers are not in the same LAN...

If you can help me........

Thanks in advance !

You can try to play with the administrative distances of static route to re-route traffic to another destination if the main route (obtained via dynamic protocol) is extinct.

I am with Alex on this. You can specify two different routes for the same destination networks provided you set different metrics. For example:

ip route 192.168.140 255.255.255.0 fastEthernet0/0 20
ip route 192.168.140 255.255.255.0 fastEthernet0/1 40

Notice the differing interface and metric.

Hope this helps

Thank you.

But the link between the router 6509 and the router BGP will always be up (99.99% of the time). So the default route will always be the first. I want to change the default when the route between the rouet BGP and the FAI is down.

In fact when this link is down, the trafic is redirected in another connection via the 6509_2 router. This connection isn't in the same LAN.

It's an Internet trafic that pass through the 6509. The default is 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0.

Yes i tried this thing, but I figured out that the configuration I used was for the 12.3 IOS (that's why, it didn't work).
I will test with the configuration allow with the 12.2 (33) SXH. I will keep you up about this.

Thanks !

I have to install the 12.2 (33) SXH in my lab. I currently have a problem with it but I will fix it. Tomorrow, i will test it.

This solution seems to be great, however i have a problem with the configuration I think...
I ping the interface but the track says that the reachability is down... Latest operation return code = unknown......

Any comments regarding that ?

>I ping the interface but the track says that the reachability is down

What interface are you pinging?
ASKER
Guillaume Zussy

Here is my configuration :

ip sla monitor 1
 type echo protocol ipIcmpEcho 10.x.x.x
 timeout 1000
 threshold 2000
 frequency 10

track 1 rtr 1 reachability

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.x.x.x track 1
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.x.x.y

So if the reachability is UP, the default route is 10.x.x.x. If not, the default route is 10.x.x.y.

Am I right ?

My lab test is :

|int Gi1/x 10.x.x.x

what about:

ip sla monitor schedule 1 life forever start-time now

This is the step 9 of the procedure in the cisco site.

That says : Configures the scheduling parameters for a single Cisco IOS IP SLAs operation.

o yea, i missed this step ! But even with this, when I make a traceroute it does not take the other default route

ASKER

I shutted down the interface 10.x.x.x.
There is no defaut route anymore in the sh ip route. I expected that the second default route appear in the sh ip route. Am I right ?
Don Johnston

Can you ping the 10.x.x.x (BTW, why are you not posting the IP address?)

What do you get with a "show ip route track-table"?

the command says :
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.201.10.102 track 1 state is [down]

One more time:

Can you ping the 10.x.x.x (BTW, why are you not posting the IP address?)
ASKER

Yes I "no shut" the interface 10.x.x.x (= 10.201.10.102). And yes, I can ping this interface.

The status of the track is now UP.

sh track 1
Track 1
  Response Time Reporter 1 reachability
  Reachability is Up
    6 changes, last change 00:00:31
  Latest operation return code: OK
  Latest RTT (millisecs) 1
  Tracked by:
    STATIC-IP-ROUTINGTrack-list 0

sh ip route track-table
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.201.10.102 track 1 state is [up]

the traceroute command work with the default route 10.201.10.102. But when I shut the interface 10.201.10.102, when I make a traceroute, the command should use the other default route, right ? This is not working...
ASKER
Guillaume Zussy

YES IT WORKS ! In fact, i configured a second track with my second interface.
When the first is down, the traceroute uses the second and vice versa !

Thanks don

Yes you are right. This is the solution. We have to configure two ip sla and two track to make it work. EXCELLENT !

Is it possible to use this configuration if the default route is redistributed in EIGRP ?
