Hung applications and slow response time using Vista OS

I'm having problems with hung applications (Word, Excel, etc.) and VERY SLOW response times.  Dell Inspiron M1330 with Intel Dual Core 1.50 GHz processor, 2038 MB RAM, and Windows Vista Business OS.  I removed all programs from the Start menu that I don't really use.  Sometimes I click on a file (Word, Excel, etc.) to open and I get an error message that the OS doesn't see the file.  I can open the app and then use "open" to access the file but it's a pain.  Are there other other settings that I can change in order to improve the situation?

Windows Vista

Scan your hard disk for errors, a faulty hard drive may cause this kind of issue, check to see if your HDD activity light is on for long periods of time.
Spyware and malware can also cause slow response time, check to see if your processor usage is unusually high.

It's a farily new system but I scan the hard disk for errors.  There were none.  I also checked for spyware and mailware but the system is clean.  Thanks for your response.
