asked on

Scanner Error - Power On > Power Off

The telephone shape LED and Exclamation point LED keep blinking while the 'Scanner Error - Power On > Power Off' message appears in the control Panel. I'm in Iraq and it is possible dust may be in the mirrors. How do you open it to access the Scanner head and clean the mirrors? Any suggestions? Thanks

Thanks. I already disassembled it and was able to clean the mirrors. They had some blue like film substance or something but they were definitely dirty. I assembled it back and now all I hear is the grinding noise from the upper right corner where the gears are located. I still get the Scanner error power on power off message.

How do I get the grinding noise to stop?
>>  How do I get the grinding noise to stop?  <<  good question !
check the gears, and the movement mechanism for dirt (blow it out ?)
check the alignment and binding by moving it manually
There is not any dirt in the gears and the gears I'm talking about are on the top compartment beneath the glass. They are the ones that pull and push the scanner head back and forth. I did take some mirrors out to clean both sides and they were both dirty on both sides.

This is what a friend of mine e-mailed me:

"They side that is supposed to be visible. it's easy to know if you touch the mirror with you finger tip, it will look like they are touching, but if its the wrong side there will look like a space between them."

Theses mirrors are giving me a headache!

HELP!

I hope I didn't turn it into a paperweight........

i don't know what you mean..
a mirror is a glassplate covered on 1 side with a reflecting dye
I know that now but one of the mirrors got some minor scratches like paper or something and maybe that is throwing it off and can't find the home position. Attached are some photos of the gear that are making noise. But when you gently move the scanner it moves smoothly. Does anyone have any suggestions in making the gear function properly?

there is not much you can do, except a good cleaning (which you apparently did)
also the bar(s) must be clean.
the grinding may also come from the motor, nothing to be heard when you manually move the scanner part ?
No. When I move it gently all gears move accordingly in both directions. My guess is the mirrors or maybe the minor scratches is screwing the Laser ccd light up. Well I tried my best. I'm in freakin Iraq and the warranty has been long gone. My employer will probably just have to take it back to resell for parts to HP and buy a replacement. The scanner assembly is expensive and it's probably best to get a new one......

Thank you Nobus. i appreciate your time and follow up it's very professional and honest.
well to be honest, i tried such stuff myself, but except for the cleaning, it is not easily fixed :
or you cannot have the parts, or they cost more than a new scanner...
Yes. Very true the darn Laser Scanner Assembly only runs at 298$ USD. Plus I'm in Iraq so there is a definite increase due to danger pay uplifts.maybe like 520$ USD So it's better to get the new Printer/scanner. There's also too much dust and that affects everything with lasers that are very sensitive.
Anyways Thanks Again.
