Printing over network print server fails occasionally

My client has an HP Laserjet 5500, which is non-networked.  In order to network it (HP don't seem to do an add-on card), I purchased a Netgear print server, a PS121.  That seems to work most of the time, but occasionally the odd page will pop up with garbage written on it, e.g. '@PJL SET STRINGCODESET=UTF8' and '@PJL COMMENT "HP Color LaserJet 5550 PCL 5c (61.71.661.41); Microsoft Windows XP 5.1.260'.  I guess this is PCL not being translated properly, but is there a way round this?  I've tried installing both PCL 6 and PCL 5c drivers, and the PCL 6 drivers were an instant disaster - pages of crap every time - so I'm happy to revert to PCL 5c.  I just need reliability - this intermittent problem is causing my client to think that we're not trying to solve it, and it's going to get heavy soon.

Thank you - have just shown your response to the client, he's happy to get another print server in.  Talk about a fast response - cheers!
