ASP.NET Webpage Error: The XML page cannot be displayed

I am having issues creating a simple ASP.NET webpage using Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2008 Pro. The webpage takes input from the user through some text boxes and saves a new entry into a database using Microsoft SQL Server 2005. When I test this webpage through the VB development GUI it runs perfect! However when I publish the website and try to view in externally in IE7 I get the following error:
The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource 'file:///C:/Documents and Settings/user/My Docu...

<%@ Page Language="VB" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="Default.aspx.vb" Inherits="_Default" %>

I have uninstalled everything to do with .NET on my computer and tried reinstalling (e.g. IE7, Visual Studio 2008, .NET Framework 3.5 and  any other Framework version etc). I even tried installing VB 2008 Express Edition but still get the same error. I tried to build the website with the Express Edition of Visual Web Developer but still with no success!
I have seached on Goolge and this seems to be a common erorr but it looks like nobody understands exactly what is going on? I see various solutions which work in some cases but not for me. E.g. one solution posted on an MSDN forum was to try to run "%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i" but this has not helped in my case.

If anyone else has sucessfully root caused and fixed this issue can you please help me out!

Thanks in advance,

My guess is the reason it worked in your local environment and not in the server deployed environment is you have a static reference to a local PC file

" Error processing resource 'file:///C:/Documents and Settings/user/My Docu..."

move that file to the server and reference it from the docroot base and try again

Hi Mel,
Thanks for your input...I tried your suggestion and published the webpage to two separate shared drives at work but am still experiencing the error.
In the meantime I stripped my PC of .NET Framework v3.5 and V3.0. This left me with a v2 installed. When I tried to open up the pusblished website (on my C: drive) the webpage opened without error but it did not have any of the controls that I put on the webpage in design time (such as drop down boxes, buttons or test boxes on it). When the webpage opened, all it had was a bit of text. It was as if IE saw the aspx file as a text file......With .NET framwork V3.5 installed this is also what I see when I try to open the aspx file in the OPERA browser....
Anyone any ideas?
