the driver is the key to succes, there is one on the MS site (as used below), believe there is a better one for windows / linux / unix machine you can download from:

However for AS400 or Mainframe, you neet to get from IBM, or pay fro a commercial product such as :
There is also a few commercial drivers which do offer performance tuning capability etc... http://www.datadirect.com/products/odbc/odbcoverview/index.ssp

check connection strings (will need to scroll to MySQL) via: http://www.connectionstrings.com/
There are a few links  and "how to" if you want to search, and check the Microsoft books on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190479.aspx

Basically (using the MS driver as an example)...

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
    @srvproduct='Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2',
    @provstr='Initial Catalog=PUBS;Data Source=DB2;HostCCSID=???;Network Address=???;Network Port=???;Package Collection=admin;Default Schema=admin;'

Not sure how to close this question, this did not work for us as we had Express server edition only.So instead we used Access to resolve our issue.

Would have worked if we had a full blown version unfortunately we do not , however I did learn on how the linked servers work. Thank you for your time and patience.
