Software Raid for Interim Coverage

Our American Megatrends Series 493 SCSI controller failed this weekend.  This is in our Gateway 960 server, which is appr 6 or 7 years old.  No getting around it, is is time to consider a new server with current technologies...

My question is:  should I go through the effort of setting up a Software Raid while we research and purchase a new Server, or should I set up some kind of script or app to copy all, or all changed data from the Primary data drive to a Secondary data drive each evening...

We have been running with the following configuration:
o Operating system on a non-raid SCSI drive, backed up to tape each night
o Primary day-to-day Data on a Raid 1 configuration with 2 identical 74 GB SCSI drives
o Secondary data (archives and occasional access) on a fourth280 GB  SCSI drive

Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated.

I understand M$ based, but what in the world is 'nix based'?  Linux?
