Need access to users "old" mailbox on old server

In the process of adding a user, my admin created the user account with a mailbox on the old Exchange server 'Server1'. Realizing this, he deleted the users mailbox, and created a new mailbox on the new server 'Server2'. Now the user has a good mailbox on server2, but we need the contents of the mailbox on the old server which now shows a red X. I tried to reconnect the mailbox to a new user, but it errors that a mailbox exists with the same LegacyExchangeDN. If I delete the users current mailbox, so now there are two disconnected mailboxes on two servers, I cannot reconnect the same user or new user to the old mailbox on the old server. If I try to reconnect, ESM just hangs.
