SQL Server 2000 Backup is Larger than MDF File

Question regarding SQL Server 2000 backups.  We have a database that has a MDF of ~30GB however the backup file that is created is ~55GB.  Does this have to do with the recovery model?  It is currently set at "Full".    Any ideas?  Side note, we do backup the TranLog every hour so do we need the "full" receovery model?  Not too familiar with recovery models.
