Website Payment Processing

I have a client who wants to be able to process credit card payments through their website. Does this require a shopping cart? A SSL? Or can it be done with a script. I am considering PayPal but am not sure if that is the best  answer. They will be collecting an estimated $5000 per month. I have checked out 2checkout and kagi and they seem very expensive.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi ron-css,

>> a shopping cart?  A SSL?

Not necessarily.

Depending on the reason for the payment, you need to deploy different solutions.  At the heart of things, you need what is called a payment gateway that charges the cards and transfers the money to the account.  However, all of this can be hosted remotely and you don't need a cart or SSL on your end unless you are storing order info or capturing customer data on your site.

Paypal, Google Checkout, Authorize.net are examples of payment gateways and all three can be set up so that you bounce the user over to their secure servers for transaction processing and then the user bounces back to you with a success or failure code upon completion.  Alternately, you can step up to a different service level and just post the payment data to them via an API.

If you give me a little more info as to what you want to do, I can make a better recommendation...

Thanks for the quick response.

I was supposed to meet with the client at 4:30 he just emailed me to postpone till tomorrow. He had an emergency .

I did not think about capturing customer data. I thought he just wanted people to pay for their garbage service online. I am not sure if he wants to be able to have people automatically sign up and then pay.

I will email him and ask - or talk to him tomorrow. As soon as I know I will post a better answer.
