Sorting does not work when grouped by subject in custom view

Okay, so I have always grouped my e-mails by subject, then sorted by date received, newest at the bottom.  The way it worked was, all e-mails would be grouped by subject, and the subject group with the newest e-mail would be at the bottom.  If a new e-mail came in with a given subject, that entire group of e-mails goes to the bottom.

Well today when I came back from getting coffee, my outlook view was completely jacked up.  I've struggled for an HOUR to get it back how I had set it (many times before) to no avail.  Even against better judgement, I did a system restore from 2 days ago.  Didn't help.

Basically, when I go to Customize View and change "Group By" to subject, it groups them properly.  However, it sorts alphabetically no matter what I select in "Sort By".

This is probably the most frustrating thing I've ever faced.  My OCD is off the scale.  A sysadmin should not be spending an hour on his outlook view.  They're straightforward options: GROUP BY and SORT BY.  A monkey should be able to figure this out.

Please help.

Windows Vista and Outlook 2007
Hi - sorry for your frustration.  In my Outlook, there is an Arranged By - is that what you're referring to, of is there another setting in the Preview Pane?  If your Arranged By is different, it might be overriding the settings you're making.  Let me know.

Arranged By is set to "Custom".

I've also tried "Arrange by Subject" and "Show In Groups", which is what I want, but it still is not sorted by date received.
Ok, Try Arranged By, Custom, then click Reset Current View.

If that doesn't fix it, try to reboot.  Maybe the settings are cached and causing you to get frustrated for no reason.

Let me know, as I'm curious what is going to resolve this one, too!

Good luck.

It's like, when I have them grouped, the sort option just DOES NOT work.  I've tried rebooting (obviously).  I even did a system restore (first time ever, I'm diametrically opposed to using this feature) and it didn't go back.  Next option is to just reinstall outlook, I suppose...
It sounds like you've tried a few options.  Bummer!

There is usually a Repair function on the Office/Outlook Installation CD as well.  Keep me posted.

yeah, I'm doing a repair now... If that doesn't work, complete uninstall/install.

The more I work on this the more it pisses me off.  In the "Group By" dialog, when you select "Subject", WHY DOES IT HAVE AN OPTION FOR ASCENDING OR DESCENDING?!  How do you "Group" something "Descending-ly"?

I just want it GROUPED by SUBJECT and SORTED by DATE.  I don't understand why this is so difficult and why it worked fine before.  I'm about to call MS.

Okay, after comparing with a coworker, I noticed his looked quite a bit different than mine in general.  This is going to sound weird, but.... I resized the frame and was able to see more columns.  I then kept jacking with the settings and put it back to "group by conversation" as well as changed some other settings, and it looked like it used to.  I have screenshot proof that the settings are not the same as they were (as the last time I got it configured as I wanted, I took a screen.  It was positively "Grouped by subject" and "sorted by received (ascending) then by subject (descending)".  Now it's "grouped by conversation" and "sorted by received (ascending)".  I had also ABSOLUTELY tried sorting by conversation before, but it looked wrong.  Not until I resized the frame and messed with the columns did I get it the way I wanted.

Attention Microsoft:  Grouping and Sorting should be related in NO WAY!  There should not be "ascending" and "descending" options for grouping.  I should be able to GROUP by whatever criteria I want and then sort by any separate criteria.

I suppose this q should be deleted, it's not necessarily answered (nor is there an answer, in my opinion).

I decided the solution was "It's bizzare".  :)
Agreed.  Glad you got it back to functional.  Thanks.
