What is Server Software?

Server needed for a startup wholesale business - think, "Money is tight".  Three PC's accessing database (QuickBooks Pro).

Is it a smart idea to purchase a six year old DELL server (PowerEdge 2400) with MS Server 2000, 1 Gb RAM, 84 Gb RAID and a 4 MM DAT tape system for $250 or would it be more prudent to purchase a new desktop that will share the QuickBooks Pro DB with three PC's?  What does server software do that non-server OS's cannot?

Thanks.

Essentially "Server software" allows you to centrally manage users, control security and manage the system. Without it each machine has administered seperatly - meaning that you could end up having to do the same thing on every machine each time you make an administrative change - it soon becomes very inefficient.
