How do I configure external user authentication in Sharepoint.

I need to be able to have clients access a dedicated site that pertains only to them.  They should be able to do all the functions like download upload and such.  They should not be able to see other client sites.  Our company needs to have access to all sites and materials.  Obviously this needs to be done from anywhere on the net.  What is the best way to do this?  Is there anyone that has something similar in place?  If so, How did you accomplish this?  Does anyone know of walkthoughs tutorials on allowing external authenticated access to Sharepoint?
