read one  column of excel using matlab

I try to read a specific column  from excel sheet for example column 1 and column 3
I used
 A = xlsread('test.xls' ) ,but it read the whole excel sheet

can any one help me in that

How did it bring in the data?  If it brought it in as an array, you could just grab the first column or whatever:

A1 = A(1, :);

or something like that.  If it comes in as text, I'll have to think some more.
