Does anybody know what could cause Word XP to crash once I choose to either insert bullets or to change them?

Bullets are part of a List Style. List styles can be problematic. I would delete your list style and then re-create it from scratch to see if that works better for you. See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html for help in creating a more stable List Style.

After you have deleted your List Style and before you use Shauna's method to create a new one, I recommend Opening and Repairing your document.
1.  Close your Document
2.  From the Open menu, Browse to your document
3.  Click once on your document to select it.
4.  Click the down arrow on the Open button to select Open and Repair.
5.  Word will open, and most likely display a dialog box indicating that some styles are the problem. I recommend saving your document, and then repeating until you can open your document without the dialog box indicating that there were problems.

Hope that helps.
