Do you need to shutdown the database prior to using the 'SQL Server Management Studio Express' to backup a SQL 2005 Express database?  I would like to run a backup while in 'production' (database online) but am hesitant if there are any issues...   If no need to shutdown database, will this simpe process create a fully recoverable database?

Thanks for any insight!

No, just run the backup as normal...

backup database dbname to disk = 'c:\backupfile.bak'

All db backups are "online"

Thanks for the feedback.  One other question - is it necessary to also backup other 'built-in' databases, such as the 'master' or 'model' in order to have a fully recoverable PRIMARY database?

YES...for sure make full backups of master and msdb....model and tempdb are not really necessary IMO, but the first two are musts.  Just make full backups of them every night or so.

Regarding potential 'in-production-risks' - does this apply to SQL Server 2000 aswell ?
