Amerzone game freezing

My neighbour has a copy of Amerzone and is trying to play it on her Core 2 Duo 6300 7600GS 512RAM XP Home system , but it keeps freezing almost at the beginning.

I've installed and run it on my old Acer laptop and my desktop, and it's pefect.

I copied the CD in case it was a drive reading problem but no luck. She can play far more complicated games with no problems.

I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete when it freezes and can just see as task manager flashes up briefly that CPU is running around 50%.

Re-boot is the only way out.

Any ideas why it won't play?

Are you both running it in XP?
If so in theory at least Amerzon needs to be put into compatibilty mode for Win98SE or Win95

yes it's XP in all cases. How to I put it into Win98 compatibility mode?
Free Tool: ZipGrep

ZipGrep is a utility that can list and search zip (.war, .ear, .jar, etc) archives for text patterns, without the need to extract the archive's contents.

One of a set of tools we're offering as a way to say thank you for being a part of the community.

Thanks, it works fine now.

It seems odd that it runs fine on XP Pro and Vista Business but on XP Home it needs to run in compatibility mode.

As a follow-up, I ended up re-installing the machine anyway as it was full of trojans, worms and other nasties - the problem is she has lots of Relexive games - I did a full Acronis backup before I re-installed - do you know where I can find the saved data from these games?

I want to re-install them clean, but restore her game data if possible.

The problem with the Reflexive games is they are a huge mixture of individual authors' work, the saved games locations will vary between each game - either in the registry, the game's installation folder or a separate folder within ..\My Documents.  If your Acronis Image has picked these up the games should play as if nothing happened.

Given the history of infections it might be worth pointing out that there are a huge number of Reflexive games available via torrent and P2P sites that are deliberately infected with backdoor trojans ...

thanks, that's what it looked like.. data files everywhere - I was rather hoping they'd all be in the same place.

Since I did a clean install to get rid of the problems, I didn't want to restore great chunks of the old system.

I think she can start them again - it'll be good therapy ;-))
