desktop windows manager stopped working and was closed

a problem caused the application to stop working correctly.  Windows will notify you if a solution is available.

Any idea what is causing this?

In nearly all the web pages I've seen about this error, where there is at least some attempt to solve it, it appears that it is a fault in the video driver.  Here is an explanation of the Desktop Windows Manager and its allied service:

http://itsvista.com/2007/04/desktop-window-manager-session-manager/

If you can't find an updated video driver that eliminates the problem, you can at least have a workaround by not using the Aero user interface:  If you want to turn off Aero, then do this:  right click a blank area of your desktop, select Personalize from the context menu, click on Window Color and Appearance, click on the link at the bottom for Open classic appearance properties for more color options, then in the next window select a color scheme other than Windows Aero.  Or you could follow the instructions on the web page above and disable the service.
