I have Roxio Creator 10 (typical installation) and am having two problems:  (1) I cant save my work and (2) after closing Roxio, I cant reopen it without first re-starting my computer.

When using the Sound Editor program in the Roxio 10 suite, and clicking on Save Project or Save Project As I get the following pop-up message: Roxio SoundEditor has encountered a problem and needs to close, you will lose any unsaved . . . etc

I click on debug, then see . . .

A yellow triangle with exclamation point
Line: 794
Char: 13
Error: An internet communication error occurred. Error code 12002
http://updateservice.sonic.com/GetMessages.asp?P={BF83EFE2-C9F0-40D4-841C-2066668C1D7A}&u={C78B98F1-95F4-4EC8-8C11-D647E65CB2A3}&v=ISUA

My system info:
Windows XP Pro Version 2002 srvc pac2
Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
HD 465GB (427 free)
RAM 1.50GB
Sony DVD RW-Q170A
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700
SoundMax 4.0
NO Napster.

Even when not attempting to save, I occasionally get the Roxio Sound Editor has encountered a problem and needs to close . . . etc. pop-up message. I lose whatever edits I always send an error report. Over the past weeks I have received various explanation notices including;  Runtime error R6025, and; memory at x00000000 could not be read.

Today, I did a clean installed, carefully following the instructions on the Roxio site up to but not including making changes to the registry. Per their directions, I used the Windows Installer Clean Up, removed the listed Program Files, emptied my recycle bin, restarted, and disabled my Norton 360 2.0 virus and firewall protections during the re-install. Still the same problem.

Can anyone help? Please.

Thanks a bunch,

John Black

I often get the Roxio sound editor message that it has encountered a problem -- but on earlier versions of Roxio, like 7.  I have not used 10 yet, but the sound editor is a great program, and I continue to use it, despite the errors.

However, in your case, it seems that the errors are related to the sound editor trying to poll the internet for something or other, which is NOT necessary or desired.  specifically, this message --

:Error: An internet communication error occurred. Error code 12002
http://updateservice.sonic.com/GetMessages.asp?P={BF83EFE2-C9F0-40D4-841C-2066668C1D7A}&u={C78B98F1-95F4-4EC8-8C11-D647E65CB2A3}&v=ISUA"

suggests it is trying to poll the internet for some update or other.  Go into the program Settings, or Options, and set it NOT to look for program updates, or to look for catalogs or anything else on the INTERNET.  Once you have set it to NEVER look for anything on the internet, reboot.

Your problem should be fixed, no?

Thank you so much for your response! I am out of town until Wednesday - and am looking forward to trying your solution. I'll let you know as soon as I do.

John

PS I have Roxio 7 too - and have never had this problem with it, although I've never used Sound Editor in Roxio 7.

It is called -- Audio Central Sound Editor -- I have version 1.1.0.2

And I apologize, it came with Roxio 6.  From 7 on they removed it from the suite -- DUMBEST thing they ever did.  The program was superb.  But it did have a bug that causes abnormal termination of recording now and again.  But I live with that, as I have not found a replacement program as good as it.

You can check ver. 7, but I think they removed it from that, which is why I went back to 6 on the systems where I do a lot of music recording.

AS I said above, I think your problem is repeated polling of the internet, for "digital rights" and "MP3 titles".  If you simply find that feature in the Preferences or Settings, and turn it off, it might work fine.

Oh man, scrathcyboy,  I was so excited. Your solution seemed to work perfectly. Did just as you said and, working all afternoon, I must have saved my project a dozen times as I worked on it - all without a hitch. Then I created a new project (of the same type) and had the same old problem: when I clicked on Save Project or Save Proiject as, the program closed.

This time, I also got a dialog box with the red-button white X and the following message:  The instruction at 0x00000000 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program.
When I click on OK a new dialog box appears:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Roxio\Sound Editor 10\SoundEdit10.exe
R 6025
- pure function call
Click on OK

When I click on OK, the dialog box disappears but I have lost my edits and I can not re-open the program without first re-booting my computer a huge pain.

For or five times, I was unable to save. BUT . . . then I was able to save without problem four or five times. I can not see anything I am doing different from one time to the next. I am not having anyother problems with my computer.

My system info:
Windows XP Pro Version 2002 srvc pac2
Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
HD 465GB (427 free)
RAM 1.50GB
Sony DVD RW-Q170A
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700
SoundMax 4.0
NO Napster.

Can you help again? Please.

Thank you,

As I said, there are bugs in the program.  How I minimize the bugs is to do a WAV recording, then before doing anything else, immediately save the recorded track to a WAV file.  I use this on a system DEDICATED to just recording old classical LPs to WAV, then burned to CD music discs.

Maybe you have to NOT do anything else while you are recording.  No task switching, and especially NO internet access -- which includes Napster and web browsers.   ALL of your hardware is top of the line for this kind of stuff.  When recording, I would CLOSE Napster, browsers, and even your antivirus program, i.e. nothing that affects or takes away from the dedicated recording task.

Eventually, with some experimenting, you will get a stable situation.  Even then, the recorder bombs out, but it is still the best I have found for detailed volume / recording settings.  Once you get it stable, THEN evaluate whether you can live with the constraints.  If you can't, dump it.  If you can, consider putting the program on a 2nd system dedicated just to recording.

You can try Nero Audio Mix software, but I found that a peice of crap, designed only for MP3s.  In short, don't give up, debug it and see if you can live with it.   And best of luck to you.  I now have a collection of classical recordings worth 10's of thousands of $$ -- it just took some patience and effort to get it stable.

Also, you might be having a memory problem.  The NVIDIA chipset requires RAM with a CAS latency of 2.5 or better.  If you have RAM with CL = 3.0, it is generally too slow for an Nvidia graphics chipset.

There is a free program you can download, called CPU-ID -- www.cpuid.com -- and it should tell you the speed of your ram.  If not, open the case, and look to make sure it is CL2.5 or CL 2.0.  If it is CL3, you likely have a situation where the RAM is just borderline too slow for the fast Nvidia chipset refresh.

Thank you so much for your follow up. I have never had the problem while recording - only when editing in Sound Editor. As you do, I record WAV files and then add them to the sound Editor project - making mix CDs from my (large) LP collection. Minimal editing - mostly cleaning up the crackle in the space between tracks.

I do not have Napster - but I usually have my yahoo mail account open. So, I will make sure to follow your advice on that. Also, I have been adding a file, then recording another, adding and editing it, then recording, adding, and editing a third etc. So, I'll do as you suggest - one step at a time - and let you know tomorrow if that works. In the meantime, thank you so much for your suggestions and moral support!  John Black, Washington DC

Hey there, scrathcyboy,  I figured it out!

You are the one who gets the points for your answer to my Line 794 question - I haven't had that problem since I did what you suggested. But I worked my own way to a soluntion on the "memory can't be read - runtime error 6025" problem.

I thought you might like the info on what I found, in case you run into it again. It isn't a "solution," but I found the Sound Editor program could be saved as long as I did NOT add a bried moment of silence at the start of the FIRST track.  Otherwise, so far, no problem!

It was driving me crazy. Sometimes the project would save just fine. Other times, not at all. So, I started wondering whether I might be doing something different each time. I started by taking your suggestion not to mix up the tasks. But, that didn't work. So, even though it makes no sense, I wondered if maybe it might have something to do with the kind of edits I was making. Sure enough!

I tested the edit features I was using one-by-one to see whether I could isolate the problem. I started by making just track breaks (nothing else) and then saving. No problem! Then I used the clean-up feature, and saved. Again, no problem. Then, deleting parts of the file, adding silence between tracks, and moving the track breaks - all no problem. I must have saved the 11 track project 50 times without a hitch. The last step was to clean up the very opening. When I used the "add silence" feature to get rid of the needle down sound - it would NOT save! I had used that feature to silence space BETWEEN all the other tracks without a problem. But,  I tried it at the opening of the first track 7 or 8 times in a row - every single time the exact same result: "Roxio has encountered a problem and needs to close, etc. " But, then I selected the needle drop sound and hit Edit>Delete rather than Tools >Add Silence from the very opening - no problem. The needle drop sound is gone, the project saved - and this bad boy is, like, so-ooo happy!

Go figure!

Anyway, thanks for your help and exemplary follow-up. I'm not too confident I won't encouner other anomolies with this product, but I'm glad to have found a work-around to this one.

"Go figure!"

No, that is correct, and NOW I remember its main bug -- if you ADD to either the start OR the end of a track, the program loses its START-END reference points, and it bombs out.

Roxio programmers are too stupid to figure this out, but I experienced the same fatal flaw.  If you can live with it, it is a great program -- mind you, they acquired it from another company, they didn't invent the sound editor.

Good luck
