I have just installed vista ultimate on my VGN A617M vaio, which had XP Home originaly and now I have a little problem, most of the XP drivers dont work on vista . Like bluetooth drivers, the special buttons for volume and brightness keys dont work too. Is there a way of making these features work on vista? I have tried all the updates for vista from the vaio support site, but it doesnt help. Can you point me in the right direction please?

Thanks in advance

normally if the laptop is vista compatible or vista capable it should have all the drivers (AS WELL AS utilities for bluetooth, buttons, etc) on sony website
I don't think you can get the button utilities anywhere else but if you know the names and models of your graphic card, blutooth adapter, etc you can just try going to the actual manifacturer website and downloading vista drivers straight from there

You can use the "Sony® Discovery Tool for Windows Vista" Operating System" to see if your laptop is compatible.

Also, I cannot find your particular model on the Sony support site, could you check that model number again. I have attached a picture of what to look for to identify it properly.
TIP: Model Numbers are usually located on a sticker located on the back or bottom of the unit. They may also be listed on the product manual.

What country was this laptop purchased in, as each country has different models.

Hi sparkmaker the support page for my laptop can be found here:

http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/preinstalled/preinstalled.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&c=-1&s=-1&m=2148

It is VGN-A617M

I have bought it in London on Tottenham Crt Rd. I havent got my laptop at hand at the moment but will use  try  that link when I get home and post some feedback. I have hoped that there could be some 3rd party software for the buttons and bluetooth. Graphics, audio, wifi drivers are working no probs.

Thanks again

Hi sparkmaker, I have tried usind the link you provided but it seems that it only works for the US customers and it does not recognise my notebook model. I think thats why you couldnt find the A617M on their support site

These are the only Vista utilities as there are no drivers I can find for your model
http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/updates/updates.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&c=-1&s=-1&m=2148&os=7&osl=1
According to Sony there is a specific order that these should be installed.

excerpt from the support pages for this model found here http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/os/vista/vista.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons

   1. Install BIOS update*
   2. Install drivers**
   3. Install Sony Utils.dll
   4. Install Sony Shared Library
   5. Install Sony Video Shared Library, Setting Utility Series*, VAIO Event Service, VAIO Control Center, VAIO Action Setup*, VAIO Power Management*, Battery Checker*, AV Mode Button*, Appmon*, Instant Mode*, VAIO Camera Utility*, Wireless Switch Setting*
   6. Install remaining downloads*

* Only if applicable.
** Most XP drivers will work in Vista. We provide Vista download drivers only if XP drivers do not work and there are no supported Vista inbox drivers. This means that, for some built-in devices such as the Memory Stick, Motion Eye camera, etc., you might have to install the appropriate XP drivers in case you perform a clean installation of the Vista OS. XP drivers can be found on the VAIO recovery disc or on our website (see preinstalled drivers).

Thanks but I have tried everything from the UK support site prior to posting here. I dont think it is possible yet to get the features working on Vista for my laptop, maybe VAIO developers will release the needed drivers and utilities eventually.

Thanks again for your help.
