Hi

i am about to commence a data migration project. As part of the project i want to conduct workshops with users to get a feel for what data we need or more to the point dont need to migrate from our database application to a new CRM.

Has anyone got any experience of migration form one application and if so can anyone give me some ideas, guidence to the sort of questions i need to ask or warnings as to what to watch for when migrating data.

any pointers welcome!!!

I've done a few back end migrations from Access to Sql Server ... my number one gotcha in each instance has been to ask what data they need often for ad-hoc reports, as well as a time frame that they run the ad hoc reports.

While looking through application screens can give you an idea of the data that you need to move .. its usually not a complete picture.

Hi messen

So does it make it more difficult by asking the user what they need and if so how would you decide what is needed?

Ac,

It makes it more difficult in some ways -- because it'll probably take longer, but you'll also end up with a more satisfied customer in the long run, by making sure you get all the data they need transfered.
