I work for a It service provider and we have about 50 Small to medium sized businesses that we offer support for (5 - 500 users; so to you US people...VERRYY SMMMALLL) <br />

Anyway, we currently have all our clients using Symantec Mail Sec or Trend for email virus and spam filtering...which is fine but can be a little hard to manage, which got me thinking about hosted services...and then to us offering hosted services....and now here to ask questions.<br />

If we were to offer hosted email spam/virus protection what would be the best way to do it? is there a prepackaged product we could buy, install on our network and then onsell (obviously point clients MX to that server etc)? or what would be needed in terms of server, software etc?<br />

Does anyone currently do this? <br />

I suppose the objectives would be:<br />
<br />
1) give us another area we could value add to our clients<br />
2) provide a reliable service to our clients<br />
3) increase ease of managment<br />
4) add a revenue stream for our business<br />

Hosted Spam/AV Filtering

Anti-virus software was originally developed to detect and remove computer viruses. However, with the proliferation of other kinds of malware, antivirus software started to provide protection from other computer threats. In particular, modern antivirus software can protect from malicious browser helper objects (BHOs), browser hijackers, ransomware, keyloggers, backdoors, rootkits, trojan horses, worms, malicious layered service providers (LSPs), dialers, fraud tools, adware and spyware. Some products also include protection from other computer threats, such as infected and malicious URLs, spam, scam and phishing attacks, online identity theft (privacy), online banking attacks, social engineering techniques, Advanced Persistent Threat (APT), botnets and DDoS attacks.

Anti-Virus Apps

Within Internet message handling services (MHS), a message transfer agent or mail transfer agent (MTA) or mail relay is software that transfers electronic mail messages from one computer to another using a client–server application architecture. A MTA implements both the client (sending) and server (receiving) portions of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). The terms mail server, mail exchanger, and MX host may also refer to a computer performing the MTA function. The Domain Name System (DNS) associates a mail server to a domain with mail exchanger (MX) resource records containing the domain name of a host providing MTA services.

Email Servers

Various techniques are used to prevent email spam (unsolicited bulk email). No technique is a complete solution to the spam problem, and each has trade-offs between incorrectly rejecting legitimate email (false positives) vs. not rejecting all spam (false negatives) - and the associated costs in time and effort. Anti-spam techniques can be broken into four broad categories: those that require actions by individuals, those that can be automated by email administrators, those that can be automated by email senders and those employed by researchers and law enforcement officials.
