I have been using ntbackup on Windows Home for at least three years.  ntabckup is now hanging.  It may be a coincidence, but it started hanging after I installed XP SP 3.

The program displays "Preparing to backup using snapshot..." and then hangs -- the window stops redrawing and nothing more is diaplayed.  The window calculating the size of the backup is not displayed.  I'm backing up to a network disk, but I can see the disk with Windows Explorer.

I ran a full disk check and that did not change the behavior.  I don't know if the problem is related to the snapshot -- I don't know how to test snapshots or how to use ntbackup without a snapshot.

What should I try to get ntbackup working again?

Can you backup to local disk? Lets start there?

If not do you see any errors in your Application or System logs?

Thanks for the good suggestions for investigation.  Sorry I didn't get to them sooner, but the end of the school year/start of camp season is busy.

I tried a backup to my local disk (with a smaller set of files) and it still hung.  The first time I ran a backup the messages below appeared in the event log.  I tried "msdtc -resetlog" as mentioned in event 4163 and then ran another backup and the second backup still hung. However after a reboot everything worked.

There are still a pair of messages in the event log each time I try a backup (below at bottom), but the backup (and verification) still worked.

According to the grading tips this should be a "B" since I needed to work for the answer, but I wouldn't expect anyone except the code developers to guess "msdtc -resetlog" from the information I gave.
