Hi,

What program are you creating the png's or gif's with?

When you export them make sure that you are exporting the alpha channel or the transparency with them.

When you import them into Director make sure that you import them with a 32 bit color depth (the option is on the import options dialog box).

When the member is in the cast, select it and check the member properties. Find the 'Use Alpha' option and make sure this is checked. If the option is greyed out then it means the image has not got an alpha channel.

Hope this helps,

Chris.
