Error 781: The encryption attempt failed because no valid certificate was found

I am attempting to connect to a VPN with a Windows 2000 Server and receiving the Error 781 message.

I also have a windows XPPro machine that can connect without any problem. Both machines are on my LAN at home. I have searched various posts on the internet and tried stopping and restarting IPSEC and Routing & Remote Access  but no success.

I'm really stuck with this and would appreciate some help. Where do I start.

Regards
James

If the XP machine can connect I assume it is likely a basic PPTP connection. The 2000 machine is likely trying to connect with a higher level of security which is not set up. PPTP doesn't use IPSec or certificates, and the 781 error indicates it is trying to do so. On the problematic client machine (2000) right click on the VPN/PPP network adapter and choose properties, then Networking, and under Type of VPN set to PPTP. See if that helps.
