I am using a GSM modem to send SMS to other mobile operators. Is there a way that I can set the Sender's number to anything else I want?

I am able to set Sender's Name if I use an internet gateway to send messages but this way is very costly. Is there any way I can do the same using GSM modem?

Probably not.
Why?
You cannot change the sender info by using the built-in SMS sending features of your phone. That's because the sender info is not decided/determined at the device at all. It is the operator's SMSC that looks up the phone number to insert based on the sender's subscriber ID. The only way to do it from the phone, is by having direct access to the SMSC (via whatever protocol the SMSC requires; e.g., CIMD2) and using a custom application.
But most of the time this option is not opened up for free. Most service providers have this option to send messages  in a custom fashion, mostly via IP, but you have to pay to use it.
So... no sender id setting for free...

actually, i have written a software which uses an internet based SMSC to send SMS. and they allow me to change Sender's info thru their APIs. But this service is pretty expensive comparing to if I write my applcation which is GSM modem based.

Do you mean that there is no way I can write my software which is relying on a GSM modem and can change Sender's info as well?
