I would recommend starting out with MRTG.  It is easy to configure and the graphs are visible via your webserver (Apache).

It gathers data (by default) every 5 minutes and provides a graph daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.

I would recommend Nagios for the monitoring of devices and services.  It has a bit of a learning curve when configuring the configuration files but is well worth the effort.
