Thanks a lot for this f-king. I followed the instructions but no luck. the same error message keeps coming up. Then I contacted HP and got two more suggestions, e.g., one at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c01049086 to do a fsutil resource setautoreset true procedure. That didn't do anything. Then to disable all services except MS, stop windows defender, etc. That didn't work either. So I'm at a loss now. But I'm attaching a Process Monitor record of the activities at the time with the offending exe entries highlighted. Perhaps someone can spot the problem. Otherwise seems the only option is to re-install vista.
Try repairing Vista first by trying this method:

This looks like a great suggestion, but the recommended vista repair ("Upgrade" option on dvd) apparently will not work if SP1 is installed. After 3 attempts to use the uninstall procedure (including 2 hours with MS help line taking charge of my machine), SP1 refuses to get off my machine, so for the moment I am stuck.
did you install the printer after sp1?
ASKER
Yes, at least I attempted to. Never got beyond the software install, which has to be done before plugging the printer in.
do you get an error when trying to uninstall sp1?
ASKER
No, it chunks away for many minutes, automatically shuts down after the 3 phases of uninstall, then restarts, and still says my version is SP1 (6001).
so the following steps were used:

ASKER
yes, i used option 1 because HP set so many checkpoints for its own attempts that the old SP1checkpoint is long gone.

thanks so much for all the help. I'll have a go in a couple of hours and report back
ASKER
Did the regsvr32 procedure, but no luck. Whatever I do I get the same error message as in my original post. Looks like I'm going to have to re-install vista and try loading the hp s/w before upgrading to SP1, or simply ignoring SP1.

Actually I need to handle the other problem - uninstalling SP1, which isn't working either.

Well, a long tedious process. Eventually I re-installed vista and all drivers now load happily. Now to re-install programmes, data, etc. etc. :-(. Thanks very much for the help.
so did you install sp1
ASKER
No, not yet. I'm seriously wondering why I should. The forums I've read say for most users there will be no difference in performance. So why tempt fate? I'd appreciate your comments.
