DNS server is adding our internal domain to external lookup?

We are running Windows SBS 2003 and using Windows DNS server (of course).  We cannot resolve one particular domain name.  Using a different PC on a different ISP I can resolve just fine.

It is odd why I can't resolve this domain name, but can resolve all others.  NSLookup fails with "DNS request timeout" and Ethereal shows "no such name" and "server failure"

1.  I wish to go to msmat1.itsupport247.net

2.  I start nslookup and the begin Ethereal.

3.  Ethereal shows my request is for msmat1.itsupport247.net.ELCOC.org

4.  You can see it is adding elcoc.org to the initial lookup.

The initial query is the client DNS Resolver adding the Primary DNS Suffix onto the query. The Resolver on the client will always add the suffix prior to attempting to resolve the name without.

Instead, see if you can query these servers:

ns1.he.net.             85237   IN      A       216.218.130.2
ns2.he.net.             38863   IN      A       216.218.131.2

Those are the Name Servers for the domain in question, if you're getting a failure it will between those two and your server.

This will work as an initial test:

nslookup
server 216.218.130.2
msmat1.itsupport247.net

You should end up with something like this:

> server 216.218.130.2
Default Server:  ns1.he.net
Address:  216.218.130.2

> msmat1.itsupport247.net
Server:  ns1.he.net
Address:  216.218.130.2

Name:    msmat1.itsupport247.net
Address:  64.62.195.166

You can see the same behaviour as you're seeing in Ethereal by using "set debug" in nslookup. It shows an initial query with the Primary DNS Suffix added, then the query you're actually interested in.

As you can see I went ...start...run...cmd...nslookup...ns1.he.net....ns2.he.net....server 216.218.130.2...msmat1.itsupport247.net.

How was I able to resolve msmat1.itsupport247.net when I couldn't before??  Just by using 216.218.130.2 (ns1.he.net)?  Who's server is that?

Is my problem fixed or was that a temporary test?

If this is done on the DNS server does it effect all DNS lookups on my MS Domain?

Best answering these questions in reverse, they make more sense that way :)

The servers are authoritative for itsupport247.net. Basically, we asked the servers that know the answer directly.

I wanted to test network connectivity from your DNS server to theirs. It worked, which is a good sign :)

Just a test. So we need to move onto the next step.

Is your DNS Server configured to use a Forwarder (DNS Console, Server Properties, Forwarders)? If it is, please remove them then run:

dnscmd /ClearCache  (you'll need the Support Tools installed to do that)
nslookup msmat1.itsupport247.net

Without Forwarders your server will use Root Hints. That means it does all the work looking for names starting with the servers listed under the Root Hints tab in the properties for your DNS Server.

There's more to test if you're not using Forwarders at present or you still can't resolve the name after removing them.

We are not using Forwarders.  I cleared the cache successfully, but nslookup msmat1.itsupport247.net still times out.  What next?

I just got a chance to stop DNS and restart DNS

Guess what....That fixed the issue, but what was the problem?

I would like to know so that I don't run into this in the future?

There will have been something cached it really didn't like. It won't be possible to find that now.

If you open the DNS Console, select View and Advanced you'll be able to see the Cache which lets you see the copy of the record your server is remembering.

If it occurs again take a look at the NS Records for itsupport247.net in your servers Cache. You will need to be able to reach all of the listed Name Servers from your DNS server.

You can get some very odd problems in DNS when people set up their servers incorrectly :)

I left this question open and I'm glad I did.  It appears this has happened again and something is getting cached or stuck in the records.  Our monitoring shows that services are unavailable.  They report back to a datacenter/NOC via SSL.  The NOC tells us our firewall is blocking 443 outbound.  They are not so smart, but it's not their job to troubleshoot either.  When this happens again, what steps should I take?  Users never report a problem, but I'm not exactly sure what sites they go to either.  

Would this have been solved by using xyz.local instead of the FQDN xyz.com?

Nope. It would only have an impact if the external name you're trying to access matches the internal .com zone.

Which bit is failing at the moment? Can you resolve the name to an IP if you run nslookup <name>?

If you can get that then we can eliminate DNS as a cause and we'll want to see what ping, tracert and telnet can do for us.

Unable to resolve

My quick fix was to stop and restart Microsoft DNS server so nothing is failing at the moment.  But during crisis mode I can't ping that name and I can't resolve that name.

Sounds like the next step is tracert?

Nope, if it's not getting the IP it's back into DNS I'm afraid.

First things first, when it fails, can you resolve anything else? That is, is the problem limited to this name, or does the server cease to answer name requests entirely?

As well as that, next time it fails can you open the DNS Console then select View, Advanced.

That will show you the cache on the server which will be really useful here.

Just so you know... It will also change make a couple of hidden reverse lookup zones visible and change the reverse lookup zone name format. It's just an aesthetic change and will revert if you turn off View / Advanced again.

In the cache, drill down into "net". From here I'd like to know a couple of things if possible:

1. If there is a Host (A) record for msmat1 cached under itsupport247 at all (there shouldn't be anything there if it's reporting that error).
2. If there are NS Records cached for the itsupport247 domain. If there are, what are they?
3. If a folder called "he" exists under the .net folder
4. If there are Host (A) Records for ns1 and ns2 under that, and which IP addresses it holds there.

And during the failure can you run the nslookup test we did right at the beginning again? Just to see if it can talk to the he.net name servers over the network.

We would expect "Request Timed Out" as a response if ICMP was dropped. We would still expect that it resolves the name to an IP Address though.

If you want to test network connectivity note down the IP of the site, then use "telnet <ip> 443" rather than the name. I suspect that will work if all you have to do is restart the DNS service.

It's happening again.  I didn't restart DNS server this time.  I see this in the Advanced view.  I can telnet via IP with no problem.

Hmm okay, so it's not cached Name Servers that are the problem.

Can you look under the he.net zone and see which A Records it has listed for those Name Servers?

I have ethereal on there now....What do you think?

I have the same entry on a Win2k3 DNS server on a totally different network / different location though =(

 Only thing different is an entry for control.itsupport247.net

That's fine, you wouldn't have control cached unless you'd previously requested it.

To be honest I don't think your server will query the IPv6 version of the record. I would like to rule it out though.

WireShark is just an upgraded version of Ethereal, it's worth grabbing it (mostly because it has more pretty stuff):

You still have to see what it's up to, what it's trying to query when it fails. Unfortunately the only way to do that will be with a Packet Sniffer.

I take it your server doesn't have IPv6 enabled in any way?

No IP v6 at all on this server.

Can I email you a .cap file?  There are lookups from the clients to the server and then the server to 216.218.131.2

Ultimately the local DNS server sends info back to the clients saying "server failure"

I witnessed nothing coming in from 216.218.131.2

There are also client requests to the local DNS server attaching the local domain to the lookup as noted in my first post!

Is the capture filtered? I don't see a response to the queries at all.

If you apply the following filter to the captured data:

(ip.src == 216.218.130.2) || (ip.dst == 216.218.130.2)

And:
(ip.src == 216.218.131.2) || (ip.dst == 216.218.131.2)

You'll see the requests I'm looking at.

That's really the only relevant traffic, the rest is server / client traffic. Server Failure is effectively a cached negative response rather than the result of another query. Normal behaviour for a DNS server in this situation.

That means we need to discover what happens to the response packets.

We won't be able to trace that on the server now. We'd have to look at the borders of your network, at the Firewalls or Routers sitting there to see if they receive and pass on packets from ns1.he.net and ns2.he.net.

It always bugged me slightly that the syntax for the capture filter is entirely different from the syntax for filtering captured data. :)

The Firewall log isn't so great. It does log Source and Destination Port though so it should be possible to match it all up.

What we'd need to do is run a capture on the DNS Server, then at the same time capture on the Firewall. Then the UDP packets in and out should be matched up by IP and Port. Oh and that'd need to happen while lookups are failing to work.

Out of interest, what is the Firewall?

Yep, but it has a firm basis for that response.

Queries sent for the names in question were never returned according to the packet trace we went through.

If your server doesn't get a response it assumes the server that was supposed to service the request failed. That's a reasonable assumption when you consider that DNS uses UDP, and that UDP is connectionless (kind of fire, forget and hope for a response).

The only thing you can do in this situation is discover where the response is being dropped. The most likely candidate for that is the Firewall.

The unfortunate aspect of that is once we find out where they drop we must find out how to stop them dropping (or at least "why" they dropped).

Basically, finding matching packets on the Firewall isn't the end of the issue.

We can try a couple of quick-fixes in the hope that the root cause is one of them.

On the DNS Server ensure the Support Tools are installed, then run:

dnscmd /Config /EnableEDNSProbes 0

That one used to cause a problem with earlier versions of the Cisco PIX Firewall there the firewall was dropping UDP packets if the size was greater than 512b. EDNS (Extended DNS) in this case advertises support for larger packets when the DNS server performs a query.

I hadn't suggested it so far for a couple of reasons. The first being that that issue is now years old. The second being it exhibits as intermittant Name Resolution rather than failing resolution to a single address).

The second item we should consider is upgrades to the TCP/IP stack in Windows 2003 in the form of the Scalable Networking Pack. This one turns it all off:

Finally, it's always worth updating Network Card Drivers on systems suffering issues like this if they're not already the most recent.

That is true to an extent, but not entirely so.

Your DNS Server will remember that all Name Servers failed to respond. It varies a little, but that will occur for a minimum of 1 minute and a maximum of 15 minutes. The actual value depends on the TTL value supplied in the SOA record for the zone (or at least it used to).

During that time it won't bother making another query against the authoritative servers. It's designed so to avoid excessive query processing for non-existent records.

The packet trace we looked at did indeed show that your DNS Server was correctly formatting and issuing a query to both ns1.he.net and ns2.he.net for the names under itsupport247.net.

Unfortunately it didn't get a reply, so it has no choice but to return Server Failed to the client. That's also why you see so many Server Fail messages, but only a couple of queries to the authoritative name servers for itsupport247.net.

It's not aberrant behaviour on the part of the DNS server, it's the missing response from both ns1 and ns2.he.net that causes the issue. Fix that and everything is rosy again.

If you need to work around the issue in the meantime (because it's causing operational issues) you could add your own Forward Lookup Zone for itsupport247.net, with Host (A) Records for each name you actively use (and probably an MX Record as well if you mail them).

Certainly, I'll do that first then come back to the other little bit above.

Here are the steps:

1. Open up the DNS Console from Administrative Tools
2. Expand Forward Lookup Zones
3. Right click and add a new Forward Lookup Zone called itsupport247.net
4. Make it Primary and Active Directory Integrated (that'll do for our purposes).
5. The Replication Scope doesn't matter. All DNS Servers in the AD Domain will do unless you have something more appropriate in mind.
6. Disable Dynamic Updates for the zone.

Now you have to add records to the zone. This is the tricky bit because you want to add everything you might need. Lets create a few easy ones first:

1. Right click on the itsupport247.net zone and add a new Host (A) Record.
2. Leave the Name blank
3. Enter the IP Address 64.62.195.162

Add their SMTP Server Host record:

1. Create a new Host (A) Record
2. Enter the name mail1
3. Enter the IP 72.52.74.46

And an MX Record:

1. Add a Mail Exchanger (MX) Record
2. Leave the Host or Child Domain box blank (we need it to appear as (same as parent folder))
3. Browse for the mail server, point it to mail1

Repeat the creation of Host (A) Records until you have everything you need in the zone.

It is very important to note that this is very much a work around. If itsupport247 change anything on their side you will have to manually do the same.

That bit is client behaviour; it's normal, but lets take a look at it.

You can see this behaviour using nslookup. Open up a command prompt then do:

nslookupset debugserver1

And you'll see that the first Question it asks includes the Primary DNS Suffix for your domain. This time run:

nslookupset debugwww.google.com

And again, you'll see the same. The first request it makes of the DNSserver is for www.google.com.elcoc.org. Might not exist, and might look a bit silly, but it won't stop it making the request.

The DNS server still has to deal with that query, normally it just responds "doesn't exist" and the client continues on. You'll see that request and response in Wireshark / Ethereal though.

Finally, issue a query with:

nslookupset debugwww.google.com.

Note the trailing "." there. That tells the DNS Client that it is "all of" the record. Not an ambiguous record requiring searching as before. This time you should see that it skips the DNS suffixes and goes straight for the important record.

None of the applications on your PC will phrase queries with that dot on the end though. They'll pass the more ambiguous version (without the dot) and add on the suffix first in every case.

I think Phil probably misunderstood what you were asking.

For the negative response, make sure you clear the cache on server and client to ensure it's getting a response from the right zone. Is it still doing that?

The highlighted packet shows the generated local query from the client (suffixed with your internal domain name), that one should be ignored.

Interestingly, above that you have a number of queries for AAAA records. Those are IPv6 queries, hopefully that won't cause much of a problem. IPv6 isn't in general use on your network?

IPv6 is not in use on the network.  I wonder how long itsupport247.net will keep those records?  How often will it change right?  I understand it is a work around but I guess I need a permanent solution here.

Everything is working now and is fine, but I put those temp records in so what would be the next step?
