Full page is rendering when controls changed in updatepanel

I have a small test project that contains 3 dropdowns in an update panel.  The partial page update works great.  When I try to implement the same thing in a production web-project, the entire page is rendered when one of the update panel dropdowns is changed.

I have checked and re-checked the web.config file and it appears to functionally match the test project. I have AJAX extensions installed on both my development machine and the webserver.

What else should I be looking at?

I discovered a solution thanks to tarung on forums.asp.net.

The produciton project had been migrated to VS2005 from VS2003 and the migration process inserted the line:

<xhtmlConformance mode="Legacy"/>

into web.config.  Removing this line eanbled partial page rendering via the UpdatePanel.
