My understanding is that you need a minimum of Office 2003/outlook to connect to Exchange on SBS 2003
Can someone confirm whether there is any hope of using Office 2000 on a SBS 2003 Domain?
Will office connect to exchange?
Is 2000 dead?

Outlook 2000 connects fine to Exchange 2003.  However, if you have SBS 2003, then you have licenses for Outlook 2003 - it's built into the CAL.  So just installl 2003 (2003 is MUCH improved over 2000).

Thank you leew.
You anticipated another question I was going to ask you - using outlook 2003. Thanks for confirming this for me.  Assuming  I use outlook 2003 for messaging, is it OK to use rest of Office 2000 components from old licensed software (word/excel) in this environment - installed on XP clients? Do you foresee any major issues in having a  mix like this?
Not sure if I can install just word/excel from older Office 2000 suite and leave out outlook 2000?
You can probably guess but the intention is to save bucks.
Customer wants to keep using current version of office instead of upgrading to Office 2007.

Use a custom setup of office 2000 - you'll have the option not to install whatever you want...
