Linking Contact and Parent Accounts

Is there a way in CRM 4.0 to automatically populate the contact address, phone and fax details with the details from the parent account. I want to do this not just for future records, but also for exisiting contact records.

Hi,

You can create a post-event plugin for the account that gets the data from the account record and populates either the primary contact that sits off the record or any or all of the contacts that sit under the account record.

As for the existing records you'll have to write an assembly to do this.  Note: Writing an assembly is the supported way of doing this.

Hi,

No worries.  A plugin is an DotNet assembly that either resides on the server or is inserted into the CRM database.  Either way will work.  The plugin is a piece of code that will fire when you specify i.e. after an account update, before a contact update, when a contact is assigned from one user to another, and many other scenarios.  In you case you wqould create a plugn that fires after an account is updated or created.  It would look at the address data in the account and check whether there is any contacts sitting under that account.  If it finds some contacts then it updates the addresses to match the account.

Thisis all done through the CRM web service.
