sony tape drive

im setting a standalone system up to test my tapes on, at the moment i use 2 tape drive -

sony sdx-550v 80gb/208gb compressed
sony sdx-400v 35gb/90gb compressed

my question, do i need a tape drive the same size as my biggest drive (80/208) to restore with or can i just use any

Generally the drive will only be able to "read" a tape of it's stated size or smaller.  So your 400 will NOT be able to read a 80GB tape from your 550.  If you use another 550 for your test box, it should be able to "read" tapes from both live systems.  You have to be able to "read" in order to restore from a tape.
