cannot create an exchange profile in outlook in a home network using RCN as my ISP

a friend is using a laptop at home running windows xp pro (service pack 2) and also using Outlook 2003.

we use RCN as our ISP

i am able to create POP3 account and send and receive emails but when i try to create an exchange account i get this message:

"the action could not be completed.  the connection to the microsoft exchange server is unavailable.  outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."

i tried creating two other VALID exchange accounts and i get the same message.

at the office (ISP is dsl.net) the VALID three exchange accounts works fine?

any feedbacks is greatly appreciated

You have two options to connect to an Exchange server remotely.  VPN connection to your office network or by using RPC over HTTP.  Here's Microsoft's guide to configuring RPC over HTTP:

not trying to connect to an exchange server... im trying to configure outlook as an exchange account rather than a pop account if that makes bit more sense of what im trying to do.

it turns out the ISP (RCN) does not allow you to create an exchange account in outlook.  i switched to a verizon dsl connection and it works just fine.
