Hello Gurus,

Could anyone let me know if there is an Alternative for IBM DB2 with less cost (If possible without license cost). We need to access DB2 server in AIX server. Can we have any software alternative to IBM DB2 installed to access it for querying the database table. A good one.

Also is Visual Analyzer useful in this case?

Regards.
Hari.

Hi Hari,

If you've got a DB2 server running, you should have access to the DB2 client.  It's performance is much better than the ODBC/JDBC drivers that are out there so if possible, try to use it.

What DB2 server are you running?

Here's a link to a list of popular JDBC drivers.  Interestingly, the DB2 driver is at the top of the list.  :)

If you're running a DB2 database, you should have some access to DB2 drivers and the client.

Hello Kent,

DB2 Server is running in AIX machine in U.S. We need to access it from India. We need to buy more DB2 clients with license. So we trying to find alternatives to reduce cost.

Can you suggest any?

We are using UDB. More over this alternative for DB2 Client we need to access DB2 database tables and do querying.

It sounds like you're working on and/or supporting someone else's DB2 environment.  They should have whatever licenses are necessary to get you the DB2 client.  You may be able to download it from them.

Yes we are supporting and we need to buy licenses but cannot buy 50 or 60+. We want to reduce the cost.

Check with the people that host the DB2 database.  If they have a licensed version of DB2, they have the DB2 client and can get you a copy.

That is not possible. Do you know any client that can be used with less cost than DB2 Client.

Aqua Data Studios and the Advanced Query Tool are pretty good, too.

ADS is a lot cheaper than Toad, but I like them both.  AQT has some issues, but the layout is very good.

Thanks a ton Kent. Does these 2 need mandatory installation IBM DB2 client or can it work independently with IBM DB2 installation?

This is because for Oracle, even though we use TOAD we still need installation of Oracel Client and setting up of the TNSNAMES.ora. I am not aware of DB2.

Thanks for your support.

Regards.
Hari.

The DB2 client doesn't have a tsnnames.ora file, but it does have its own configuration file.  You can edit it directly, but that's not for the timid or inexperienced.

I don't believe that and of those clients have a DB2 ODBC driver built into them.  But I haven't researched that in a while.

Hari,

perhaps SQuirreL would help you. Has charts of tables and their relations too, but I think it's not any visual analyzer. And it's under "The GNU Lesser General Public License".
