Resently I was asked to create the following reports regarding our Exchange 2003 evironment:
Please provide me a report showing the operating characteristics of our Exchange environment over the last 6 months.
I have not created reports before related to this however I do use the Exchange log files and review the Event Viewer logs when there are issues with the server or Exchange.  What would be your recommendation for creating reports that show the operating characteristics and the could graph the mail flow if you only have the basic tools that are provided with Exchange?
When I try to pull the logs into Excel they are always too large to for the worksheet.

I feel like I should know this because I've been managing Exchange 2003 for 6 years now however this is an area that I have been remiss in.

Do you have any suggestions?

There are hundreds of objects that you can monitor in Exchange.  Have a meeting with whoever requested the reports and try to narrow it down to something more meaningful - such as how many emails did our server process, how many GBs of mailflow did our server process, etc.  Once you have a good idea of the report content, then use Performance Monitor (Counter Logs) to monitor thouse values.
