In Illustrator CS3, aligning a blend to apth

If I have two objects I want to blend in Illustrator, how do I "connect" the objects to the path I want the blended objects aligned to?  Adobe Help just says do it.  But what establishes the connection of the objects to the beginning and end of the path?  And with what tool must the path be created?

Thanks!

Thanks, Sheharyaar. Well worth the points. One more question: I norice that if I create my path with the pen tool , the blend objects (evenly paced on the sraright line) come out unevenly spaced on the path. If I create it with the pencil tool, they are evenly spaced but of course my curve is no longer perfect.

Am I somehow using the pen tool improperly?
doesn't happen with me
just create two nodes to create the curve
and then remove the fill and line and leave the path only
oh I was doing it with a 3 node curve that looks like a wave. I tried it with two nodes and still got the same result. Could you take a look at the file and see if you can figure out what's going on?
