Changing values in forms drop downbox using replaceChild

I have a web form with a dropdown box and I want to be able to dynamically change the list.  I have been playing around with replaceChild but only managed to add a new value to my list.  I want to replace all the values with a new set.

<select name="ctl00$pageContents$role" id="ctl00_pageContents_role" >
      <option value="1  :- >10 items">10 = 1.00</option>
      <option value="8  :- >100 items">100 = 8.00</option>
      <option value="35  :- >500 items">500 = 35.00</option>
      <option value="60  :- >1000 items">1000 = 60.00</option>

for example change to
<select name="ctl00$pageContents$role" id="ctl00_pageContents_role" >
      <option value="2  :- >10 items">10 = 2.00</option>
      <option value="16  :- >100 items">100 = 16.00</option>
      <option value="70  :- >500 items">500 = 70.00</option>
      <option value="120  :- >1000 items">1000 = 120.00</option>

I have written the following javascript function that I can call and seems to just add a new item to the list rather than replace the first item

    function test1()
        refElem = document.getElementById("ctl00_pageContents_role");
        var newOption = document.createElement('option');
        var optionValue = document.createTextNode('10 = 2.00');

I know I'm going to also have to do somthing with the attribute for the value, but could do with some guidance.
