How do I report a running total number by month of records based on status (open, closed, void)?

I am trying to create a table that calculates the number of open records in a given month, and then displays the data in graph. Here is the background:
Unique records are initiated and closed in a given month, but there are open records which are carried over from month to month. The calculation I have used before is [count distinct initiated records/month - count distinct closed records/month] = number open per month.
The analogy I have used in describing this before is a checking account. You have a starting balance, then the balance changes based on deposits and withdrawals. This question has probably been answered before, so if someone out there can point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it!
