Firewall Blocking Apple Software Update

I have a FortiGate 60B firewall. Since we put it in place, it's blocked the Apple software update on our Mac OS 10.4 machines. As a test, I turned the protection profile on outbound traffic only to unfiltered, and the updates worked. After resetting the protection profile to a more restrictive setting the software update application returns the following error:
A networking error has occurred. NSURLErrorDomain -1005

I checked the log files and I can't find anything to suggest where the issue is. Any thoughts on what port / protocol Apple uses to do this and what I might settings might allow this through without turning off the protection on all outbound traffic?

To clarify: the software update application can download the list of software to update, just not the software itself... that's when the error occurs.
