troubleshooting Question

External Emails getting lost before reaching recipient.

Several emails going to external addresses are not reaching their destinations and they are known working emails and we are not getting any kind of bounce message and they never get there.  When we check the event viewer on the SBS 2003 exchange server, we see hundreds of events 3008, 3017,3018, errors all ms exchange transport errors claiming a non-delivery report generated for email addresses we do not recognize and did not send to.  Most of the addresses end in .it or .ita and none of them are ones we ever sent to and don't even look right.   Has anyone seen this before and is there something we need to do to the server or could it be a security/spam issue as they do not have a spam filter set up currently?
