Slow opening documents from shares after server replacement

I recently swapped out a server using the following guide/procedures
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23495555/Replace-server-hardware-Looking-for-Microsoft-best-practices-guide.html

Everything seems to be functioning, except when I turn off the old server, workstations seems to be very slow to open documents, programs, etc from the new server.

DHCP is managed by the router and DNS points to the new server.     If I turn the old server back on, documents open quickly, even though they are being loaded from the new server.    Does anyone have a suggestion?

Have you done a ipconfig release and renew on the clients? Do they have the new DNS in the TCP\IP settings?

Thanks for your reply.   That was the first thing I tried.  No luck.
How are the users accessing the files on the server? Did you check to see if the server has all FSMO roles? Do you have any errors in the Event logs? Is the new server a GC? How long have you waited before turing off the old server are you sure that everything has replicate? Have you ran the ipconfig /flush dns on the clients if not do this because the clients still will look for the shortcuts in the DNS cache?
I think I transfered all the FSMO roles.    I didn't have any problems.    Maybe I didn't wait not long enough for replication.   I will check tomorrow.    One of the reasons this server is being replaced, is because it has a habit of turning itself off.     It won't stay on for more than a few hours at  a time any more.

You read my mind.   Thanks.
All the roles seemed to have transferred OK based on what is presented in the MMCs
Have you flushed the dns on the clients? Did the old server have WINS setup?
