Help with Laptop

Recently my laptop has been freezing up after 20 minutes.  I have to turn it off by holding the power button and having to wait 30-45 minutes.  But after it turns on same results.  If I don't wait 30 minutes to turn on, I hear the fan turn on but no screen display.  Some of the other indication I get are the power light is on and the MP light is on.  I searched your site and found an old entry.  I am asking if there is anything else I can do

It sounds like the laptop is overheating.   Have you tried propping the laptop up so that there's clear airspace underneath it?  (to see if it can stay cooler).

It's REALLY hard to say anything, because I can come up with a large list of things that could be going wrong, from malware/viruses to failing hardware components.

Do you have a temperature monitor utility built into the laptop programs?  (some manufacturers have something like this)

Also, is it 20 minutes _period_, or 20 minutes of idle time?

If it's idle time, try shutting off power saving features when the laptop is physically plugged in.

Bibliophage.. It's 20 minutes period.  I can move the mouse for 20 min and it freezes.
Then it's overheating - if it's always the same amount of time.  (some malware can do it, but not quite like that, and not with that cooldown period)

Try blowing a can of compressed air into the keyboard area, and the vents around the bottom, side, and back.
