Can I use an XP Pro disk to repair an XP Media centre 2005
I have a friend who has has a Philips freevents x55p laptop that won't boot up, I have managed to trap the BSOD error and it says "UNMOUNTABLE_MOUNT_VOLUME" with the tech info
STOP: 0x000000ed (ox86d762f0, 0xc0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I think that I need to run chkdsk /f from the recovery console, the problem I have is I have no XP media disk, only an XP Pro. Is it possible to boot from the XP Pro disk to try and repair the XP media HD.
This laptop has all my friends family photographson and she is despirate to get these back (I have already given her the lecture on backups) Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

>>but no c: prompt appears << this means it does not see the OS
>> I cannot loose this data << then a backup is your first goal - later you can try repairs and fixes
>> is FIXMBR safe to run << yes it is safe - on healthy OS'es, however; and that is always the problem; you only know what was wrong after the repair
so my first step would be :
i would hook the disk to a working pc (for ide: mind the jumpers) and copy the data, or recover it with the proper soft, or try to make an image of it, then you have everything

Good News!!!
I connected the drive to another machine using one of those USB gizmos, drive came up as E, ran chkdisk f on E and it found loads of errors. Replaced disk into laptop and everything now fine. The girl sobbed when I told her we hadn't lost her pictures so many many thanks for your help.

One other piece of information, I booted off a ghost disk and then went into the command box. I ran chkdsk from there but it said that the volume type was RAW and couldn't be run. I am thinking of running FIXMBR to try that but I cannot loose this data, is FIXMBR safe to run?
